Diskeeper keeps our large systems optimized on the performance end. This is highly critical to our mission, which is running extremely resource-hungry CAD and 3d-modeling programs. The most valuable feature is "Set It and Forget It". This allows each of our workstations and servers to "self-improve" defragmentation each night so that they are fresh and ready to perform the new day's assignments.  

We use a program called AutoCAD to perform drafting on a large number of projects. Although our workstations are well-equipped to handle the graphic load this program puts on our systems, if the defragmentation level is allowed to remain unchecked, a noticeable reduction in performance is readily apparent. Problems that are resolved include file loading time, regeneration times, and the ability to handle large file sizes easily without major hiccups. Without a properly-tuned machine, rendering times increase dramatically (and every minute a machine is tied up doing a rendering, is money not spent being truly productive). Automatic defragmentation ensures that each morning our machines are ready to step up to the plate and perform their appointed tasks with a minimum of interruptions.

I find the Diskeeper user interface and the added features such as Boot time defragment, to be excellent. The standard XP defragmenter is a good tool, however it sorely lacks essential features and is usually ignored by a lot of folks not realizing the importance of this function. A reliable computer with large systems has to have a healthy hard drive, regularly maintained.

My employ is that of a marine engineer and we have a LOT of computers on board---usually Windows 2000 Professional  and these things are on the go all the time. I am very comfortable and pleased with Diskeeper and know it was worth every cent. 

When there is a lot of program activity--install/ uninstall, file movement/ backup/update/modify, etc.,  there is a real occurrence of hard drive fragmenting with a consequent reduction in computer performance and ultimately reliability/ stability problems. Auto defrag is a solution to this problem. " Set It and Forget It" is excellent; let the software do the work for you.  Large, commercial sites should definitely go for auto defrag, either on Smart Schedule or set and forget basis. I have looked at other so-called defragment tools and am convinced some are the modern version of the old SNAKE OIL treatment.
