SEARCHING THE INTERNET

SIMPLE SEARCH  METHOD

1. Submit a search term:  (keyword search) type a search term in a text box (the blank box at the top of the search engine) and then click the submit button to send the term to the search tool.  The search term serves as a key to finding matching pages.

2. After you click submit, scroll below and you will see underlined web pages containing a URL (Uniform Resource Locator), a title, a brief description, and group of keywords intended to describe the page's contents.  If your search term matches anything in that record, the search tool considers the page a match.  This list is called a hit list.

3. Hit List:  a list of links, produced by a search engine in response to a search term you have entered.  Each link is a hit, a page that contains a match for your search term.  Click on these links, and if it turns out to be a near miss, then, use your "back" button at the top of your browser to return to your hit list and try a different page, or start over with a new search.

4. You may need to change your keyword or key phrase to get the results you are looking for, here are some basic tips for improving your search success:

a. Use the simplest form of a word.

b. Use the singular form of a word rather than the plural.

c. Use common Capitalization, and lower case for the rest of the word.  Be careful to observe funny computer words like FrontPage (unusual capitalization).

d. Be as specific as possible.  Example: If it's the German Shepard you searching for, use that as your search term, not dog, which will produce too many hits, and many unrelated to German Shepard.  Having said that, if your very specific term doesn't get you what you are looking for, you may have to go to a less specific, generic term (dog), after all.

e. Try partial words.  Always try full words first.  But if they're not working out, try the partial word.  Example:  you want to match both puppies and puppy, you can try "pup" as a search term, which matches both.

5. Many hits from a search will be located on more than one page and you will see "next" or 1234...at the bottom of the page, click on these to view the next page.  Use your back button to return to 1st page.

6. Finally, if you are not finding what you are looking for, try a new search for what matters to "you".
